Question about Anxiety?

Hao edited the following:

Question about Anxiety?I have been having what I think are "anxiety attacks". I feel like I cant concentrate and my heart beats really fast and I can only breathe shallow breaths and I get light headed. Kinda like I'm about to have a heart attack. It really scares me, I never knew what was really happening to me until I told one of my friends about it. She said it was anxiety. I work full time as a supervisor in a retail store and It usually happens while I'm at work or on my way to work or when I'm on my way home from closing the store. I just start thinking about things that I could have done wrong at work. That might have went wrong. Or that I'll get in trouble for something that I know nothing about. Then I get shallow breathed, my heart starts pounding, and it's weird but ill catch myself counting, and singing the numbers (normally when I'm driving to work) but i don't realize I do it until something jars my focus, like having to stop at a red light. When I get to work I immediately go to one of my coworkers and ask "did Alissa (my boss) say closing went okay?" or some variation of that question. When I was telling my friend about this (I chose to leave out the whole counting to myself part-kinda embarrassing) she told me I should go to the doctor to see if there was anything to be done. I'm not really wanting to go to the Dr really because I don't want him to think I'm making things up to try and get drugs. I don't know what to do. Is this serious? Will the doc think I'm just trying to get drugs? Will the Dr be able to do anything?

Of course the doctor will ba able to help you,and yes it does sound like anxiety to me anyways.I had the same symptoms like you....and I don't think the doctor will think you just want drugs, just when you go to the doctor do NOT even bring that subject up(about the doctor thinking you want drugs). If you bring the subject up?Then the doctor will most likely think that's the only reason you are there, just be honest about what's going on with you.And also tell your doctor when these episodes start to happen..this will help the doctor determine what is actually causing your anxiety attacks....I really wish you the very best...and good luck at the doctor...:).

Most doctors understand the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders. If you have some history of seeking drugs with him then you may have a problem. There are also methods you can work on first to see if you can develop more control of your anxiety. If your practice of these methods does not help sufficiently then you will be more sure that you need a doctor's help. See below. I think your counting and singing is your way of distracting yourself from the anxiety and is a good start on learning to manage and lessen the anxiety.

Practice these methods for several weeks to see how that goes.

I have the same problem. It is an anxiety attack (panic attack). The doctor will not think you are trying to get drugs; I wondered that myself when I went. He will likely prescribe something for it. I waited a couple years, dealing with them on my own. Then one day I had a panic attack that lasted almost an hour, which is pretty rare. This is when I finally called my doctor about it, I felt like I was actually going to die this time. By the time I got to the doctor a couple hours later, my blood pressure was still so dangerously high that he gave me xanax and sent me home to go to bed, telling me that one more attack that day would probably lead to cardiac arrest. I am only 30. He also prescribed Paxil. I have been taking it and have only had one or two in the past 6 months, which is really good for me as I was having them really often. But I would definitely recommend taking care of it now before it gets worrse.
