Why is "separation anxiety" a problem now... it hasn't been in the past. See below...?

Hi,I did the following:

Why is "separation anxiety" a problem now... it hasn't been in the past. See below...?My son is 18 months old and about 1 month ago he switched to the toddler room at daycare, rather than being in the baby room.
The first 3 weeks of this switch went great, without a hitch. He was clearly ready for the switch. Now after 3 weeks, he is "digressing" and getting very upset when I drop him off. Crying and squeezing me... won't let go. Of course I dealt with this when he was 1 year old... but then he grew out of it and it has been months since he's done this.

How do you deal with this? Any tricks to help him feel more comfortable? I am traumatized leaving him, but always within 5 minutes of leaving, he is fine and happy and playing with his friends.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Maybe there is someone in the room he doesn't like, another child, adults in the room? Ask if you can stay and observe him without him knowing and see what is happening.

Just tell him that mommy has to go...(tell him where you're going) and the time you will be back for him, this just lets him know exactly where you are and when you are coming back for him. Walk him over to his friends and maybe get him started on an activity. don't prolong the goodbye, make it short and sweet.

It could just be the routine of the new class...maybe he's just used to the way things were done before and he's going to have to readjust.
