young adult with high blood pressure?

Hao edited the following:

young adult with high blood pressure?I am a 21 year old student with some questions about my blood pressure. I recently went to one of those pharmacy clinic and took my blood pressure and it was 156/107. I know that is extremely high, but I know I typically get anxiety around those things or "white coat syndrome". I sat there, relaxed and everytime my blood pressure was lower and lower to eventually when I quit being obsessive, it was at 114/81. What does this mean? Do I have anxiety induced high blood pressure? Should i worry?

The problem is that the accuracy of such machines is not known. So whether you recorded 156/107 mm Hg or 114/081 mm Hg you have no manner in which to determine if either reading was accurate. Most physician offices will check a person's blood pressure for free. I would suggest that you obtain an accurate reading before trying to interpret the reading. In addition no decision should ever be based upon a single reading. If you have reason to check your blood pressure you should consider a home blood pressure unit. Blood pressure is under the control of the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus and follows diurnal circadian variation. This means that it goes through 2 wide swings during the course of any given day and the difference between the lowest and highest readings may be as much as 50/25 mm Hg. This questions the reproducibility of office based readings which are typically the highest reading of any given day. I am aware of only 1 study which evaluated the accuracty of such blood pressure units and they concluded that the Omron and the ReliOn were the most accurate. It is of note that Consumer Reports rated the ReliOn a 'Best Buy' as it is less expensive. This study tested only units for the upper arm. There is no data on wrist blood pressure units. If you take your blood pressure at home immediately upon awakening the goal is 115/075 mm Hg. This is because there is a linear increase in cardiovascular risk above this and for every 20/10 mm Hg increase there is a doubling of cardiovascular risk. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I wish you the very best of health and happiness and in all things may God bless. JR
