what should my mom do about her hair?My mom is 40. And she's always colored her hair because if she didnt she would be completely grey. Now, shes having bad anxiety and doesnt want to color it anymore because it's "cancer causing" and shes worried about having an allergic reaction. I think she's too young to go grey, and grey only looks good on people with short hair and she has mid-length.. Any suggestions on what she could do?

She could leave it the color it is (grey doesn't have to look bad...) or she could cut it shorter? I suggest just leaving it the color it is and just cutting it into a different style or tying it up so it looks nice. :)
Good luck!

try going to some kind of hair specialist who would know this kind of stuff. they could probably tell her about a very gentle or safe dye. if not, just let her grow it out. there are plenty of 40 year old women who gray. if she's okay with it you should be =)

Hi Ann.
I am 48 and I am a colorist/hairstylist. My hair started turning gray when I was in my early 20's. I've been coloring my hair since then. Just like your mom I'm tired of coloring my hair every 3-4 weeks. So I've decided to grow out my hair color and see what my hair looks like. Who knows maybe I won't like it and I'll go back to coloring it...but maybe I'll never color it again.
So the problem I have is as a hairstylist/colorist it isn't good for my business if my roots are showing. So what I have been doing for the last 4 months is coloring my hair with a semi permanent hair color. So the new growth has semi permanent hair color and the mid strand and ends have permanent hair color. Once all the permanent color has grown out and been cut away I will stop coloring all together and I'll allow the semi permanent hair color to fade out. Other than completely cutting off my hair this is the correct way to go gray gracefully one a person's hair has been permanently colored.
