i do things to get my mind off of it, like read or listen to my music really loud.

Anxiety is a feeling of mental tension, and confronting a fear will certainly release it. But the only way to really get rid of anxiety is to confront the underlying source of it. So, if you're generally anxious and also scared of bungee jumping, then going out and bungee jumping will indeed calm your anxiety for a while. But it WILL come back, if what your anxiety is about is anything other than bungee jumping.
Figure out what really causes your anxiety, and once you've determined it's cause, work at overcoming it. How you do so will entirely depend on what the source of your anxiety is. The best place to start is to figure out what you really think, about yourself, about those in your life, about society, politics, philosophy, etc. --- once you know all that, or have some idea of it, then it's easier to pinpoint what makes you anxious. And you'll also stumble on some things that may interest you, and become something new to focus your mind upon.
