Difficulty Breathing? Cause? How to Resolve?

Difficulty Breathing? Cause? How to Resolve?I have been dealing with a post-nasal drip for quite sometime now. I am an ex-smoker. I did not quit that long ago. I notice that when I have cough, which can be often, I get some phlegme with it. I also have my chest tighten up and it is hard to breathe. I also suffer from anxiety attacks. When I cant breathe from the "allergy attack" then I get nervous and I think the worst and get an anxiety attack. I have rushed to the ER before and they say my heart and lungs are fine. My EKGs are good and I have a clear chest x-ray. Now, I also have acid reflux. Yes, I know, I wonder why I don't just shoot myself. :) The acid reflux can cause a problem breathing too, as told to me by an ER doctor. I started taking Claritin-D for the allergies/sinitus and acid reflux meds for the acid. I take ativan when i have anxiety attack. I guess my question is, what could cause all this (aka: asthma, etc) and what can be done to resolve it? Its scary when u suddenly cant breathe and your chest hurts, ya know

Trickle salt water into your nostrils when you have difficulty breathing through your nose, if it's just breathing in general you can try using Vaporub it soothes the airways

I'm betting you have adult onset asthma. Schedule a visit with a pulmonologist he can run a test to verify you have asthma or not... or if no pulmonologist is available talk to your primary care physician.. while he wouldn't be able to test you the same way he could give you an enhaler so that the next time you started having the problem you could use it... if you do have asthma it would help... if you don't have asthma then the enhaler wouldn't help but also wouldn't hurt... its one way of verifying asthma, and probably cheaper than seeing a pulmonologist.

If you do have asthma the claritin is worthless... your best bet for daily meds for mild asthma would be 10mg of singulair (montelukast sodium).

If you have both asthma and anxiety symptoms you should take a buteyko breathing course. I had asthma for 30 years and intermittent anxiety problems. I was very cynical but did the course because I was desperate and in the middle of a bad anxiety period. I was hoping it would help my anxiety but never really thought it would cure my asthma. To my surprise it totally cured both. Today I take no drugs at all. Just try it.
